Liver Support: TUDCA vs NAC vs Milk Thistle

The difference between TUDCA, NAC and milk thistle for liver support, who needs which one, and when to get a liver function test.

Your liver works to clear everything you eat, drink or take as medication. Some medications and supplements put more strain on it than others, which is why many people look for liver support.

The best protection for your liver is to avoid what harms it and to get liver function tests regularly. Supplements help, but they do not cancel out the damage from things that harm the liver.

TUDCA

A bile acid your body makes naturally in small amounts. It improves bile flow, protects liver cells from stress, and is used medically for some liver conditions.

NAC

Helps your body make glutathione, one of the strongest antioxidants your body produces itself. Hospitals use NAC to protect the liver in paracetamol poisoning.

Milk thistle

Its extract, silymarin, has long been used for liver support. Research results are mixed, but it is safe and suits light daily support.

Which one should you choose?

  1. Light daily support all year: milk thistle.
  2. Stronger support for a set period: TUDCA.
  3. Full protection: TUDCA with NAC.

Liver function tests

If you take heavy supplements or medication long term, get your liver enzymes (ALT and AST) checked before you start and every few months. If the numbers are high, see a doctor. Supplements alone are not the answer.
